In 2008, the Brooklyn Philharmonic's smartARTS academy opened at IS 220 - John Jay Pershing Middle School in Sunset Park/Boro Park, Brooklyn. This exciting new program is fully funded by a New York State 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant. Over 100 middle school students participated in this full-time after school academy enrolling in classes ranging from Orchestra and Band, to Ballroom Dance, Theatre, and Technology. Students spent 10 hours a week learning to play a new instrument, recording original music with professional studio equipment, and perfecting their dance moves. Culminating performances dazzled parents, friends, and family with everything the academy members had learned throughout the year. In addition to regular classes, the smartARTS students also attended orchestra performances and their very first Broadway Show!

In August 2009, the smartARTS academy held its first intensive summer camp for incoming students. Campers painted a permanent mural in the main hallway of the school, learned Brazilian percussion beats, played theatre games, and choreographed their own dances.
